Rocky Point or El Golfo, Mexico
The family and some friends are really wanting to do a trip to mexico the first weekend of April, I've been going to these places since I was 10 and never payed much attention to the people that didnt think it was safe to go there, I never looked for trouble and low and behold never found it, However I have found myself paying alot of attention to the media advice to avoid mexico for now.
Do any of you other veterans of mexico travel (Scooby) think its a bad idea to go there right now?

Re: Rocky Point or El Golfo, Mexico
Its weird that you bring this up.
The regular guy we rent a condo from was just asking me if I want to reserve it . And I am thinking about not going this year. ![]() I dont know if the border violance is worse or just getting more press ![]() I imagine if traveling/carvaning in a group would be much safer though. I have never had a single problem in many many years. I just dont know myself either might be time to try something new in the USA

Re: Rocky Point or El Golfo, Mexico
We are going to Playa Del Carmen in May. I have never had any trouble over there. I imagine if your in the wrong place at the right time it could be bad with all the drug lord crap going down. But Mexico Government is actually pressing them hard to try and get that stuff out of Mexico.

Re: Rocky Point or El Golfo, Mexico
There are 2 spots I see as the problem.
It's the Border town and the 60 mile stretch of nothing betwenn the border and Rocky point. Both of these are vulnerable spots. Once in Rocky point I dont worry at all, And I am now at the age where I avoid the "night life" in town. I Party with freinds and family at the Condos or RV park. As far as the "Mexico Government" They ARE my biggest fear Federalies are not your Friends

Re: Rocky Point or El Golfo, Mexico
I would suspect many of these hoodlums to consider a nice Ranger as a great score these days and they don't care at all about who is in it.
This is a 50/50 problem where the drug loards and the corrupt police and government have lots of disagreements. Getting caught in the middle of this would be a very bad situation. I would avoid all of the border areas at all costs right now and would not rely on what was a safe area in the past. Places that were fine last year might well be where the bad guys are setting up new operations this year. The global economy is in the crapper right now and this brings out the worst of the worst. Gary

Re: Rocky Point or El Golfo, Mexico
I believe I have decided not to chance it,
I am now looking for suggestions on an area in which it would be warm enough for kids to play in water (River, stream or lake) , and cool enough to go on some rides during the day the first weekend of April. Any suggestiong would be great. Dan

Re: Rocky Point or El Golfo, Mexico
Smart decision! I would do it with me and some buddies, properly armed, but never with the kids and wife right now.
I am sure there are other places to have fun and avoid the BS. Gary

I bought a little john boat last year. Between the boat & the lake , the Ranger & the trails, should make for some good family times .I remember country girl and her family had just bought a canoe to go with there Ranger too. Maybe we can all get together at the lake sometime
