ranger oil filter popped

i use napa oil filters and a week ago my 05 ranger popped an 0-ring on the oil filter and pumped most of the oil out of the engine fortunately the motor was shut before their was damage. this could have been the result of failure to let the engine warm before hard accelerating

Re: ranger oil filter popped

Was this a NAPA Gold?
Was this a filter that is supposed to fit or did you just use one designed for car/truck that happens to fit?

Its possible the filter was not installed properly or maybe even defective. I only seen this happen once before on a car and it turned out to be the gasket was either defective or damaged during install.

Wix makes filters for NAPA and the Gold is there filter in NAPA trim. All the other NAPA filters are made by WIX to NAPA spec's, meaning lower priced. I would only use the Gold, the other are made with less costly materials and still meet spec's.

when that typically happens on a car, the old seal sticks to the filter housing, then the new filter is put on with the old seal between the housing and the new seal. works ok until oil pressure blows out the old seal causing the oil to spew everywhere. The cars usually make it out of the shop, but not too far down the road. Hope it helps.

I use carquest oil filters (blue) and have not had any trouble.

Fyi

CarQuest Blue are also made by WIX, same as NAPA Gold, a WIX in CarQuest trim.

Re: ranger oil filter popped

I did it once many moons ago and now when ever I change a filter I physically remove the rubber gasket from the old one and hang it off the end of my drain pan.

Could it be that you didn't tighten it down sufficiently? I have had a few that were real tight and a SOB to get off and then a few others that came off way too easy which is scarry.

Re: ranger oil filter popped

One other thing to keep in mind when changing filters is to put a thin film of oil on the new filter oring. There is a possibility, if this was not lubed, when the new filter was tightened, the oring distorted and caused leakage. This is not real common, but I have seen it happen.
