How to change oil on a 2003 Polaris Ranger 500 ?

Hi, I've searched the internet looking for tips or instructions on how to change oil in a ranger and have not found much.

I have read that you have to prime the oil pump and there may be some other important tricks?

Has anyone done this before that can give advice or step by step instructions?

I know I can bring it to the dealer but I would rather do it myself.

Sections 2.31 are for oil changing on the 500 and section 3.54 is for the pump priming. I just did mine the other day.

As much as I like my Ranger, maintenance is a real PITA.

The oil change directions leave out a couple of things. For one, you need to drop the skid plate, not just for the oil change, but almost everything else as well. Finally, on my 03 the nipple fitting and filter screen are mounted on the front of the oil tank. The fitting is some weird size and I had to use a universal wrench to get it off. Also, when you have it loosened, there is not enough clearance to pull the fitting out unless you loosen the oil tank itself as well. I'm not familiar with the loctite compound the manual recommends, but its red and it causes the fitting to seize, making it difficult to get it off. Clean all the old loctite off the threads of the nipple/screen fitting threads to keep it from flaking off in the oil tank when you reinstall it. I used Napa High Tack for the thread sealer. It won't dissolve into the oil and it won't harden and seize, but it will seal just as well.

I'd watch this fitting like a hawk for oil leaks. The clamp is not strong enough to seal an old hardened hose, and using a screw clamp is better. But you can crack the hose with too much torque on the clamp, causing an eventual leak.
