Ranger 2005

Carburetor 2005 Model Ranger 4x4. Here's the problem. Very difficult to crank. Once cranked will runs for anywhere from 10 seconds to 10-15 minutes. Hot weather - cold weather, no difference. Sounds rough - as if it is missing. Not using oil. Coolant level OK. Stalls under typical driving strain. Sometimes within 100 feet ... sometimes within 1 mile. Sometimes will back fire just before stalling - not always. Seems to be "rich" ... exhaust smells "gassy" just before it stalls. After sitting a while, will usually crank again. Will eventually stall out again. I am not a mechanic ! All I can do is the simple stuff.

Here's what I have done. Checked air filter - OK. Removed and checked fuel filter for clogging - clean. Checked spark plug - clean and bright. Checked choke linkage - seems to be OK and operating correctly. Checked fuel pump function - as far as I can tell, seems OK. Steady stream though the fuel filter. Drained all fuel out of the tank and replaced with Amoco "Ultimate". No difference.

What's next ? Anything simple ??

Re: Ranger 2005

may want to test battery and electrical system (alternator, connections to battery, starter and ground on engine or frame). sounds like possibly a low voltage problem, that would explain slow crank as well as a possibility of not enough voltage to the ignition system which could cause the coil to break down under load. start there and if you still have problems, I can give you some other possibilities. I am new to rangers, I have an 09 that I haven't broke yet, give it time. I don't know what type of ignition system polaris uses. I plan on getting a manual, so I should know more in future. David

Re: Ranger 2005

Can't believe I didn't see this earlier, Had similar problems started out with what seemed like major power reduction then graduated to your symptoms.. My wrench discovered the wrong size jets in the carb (one was even plugged up). Any way new jets and I was re injuring my neck with pleasure, again. Good luck and keep us posted..
