New to Board/Ranger - Looking to but 08 - Couple of Qs
Looking at a new 08 Ranger XP for $3k off price out the door. No hours (or new delivery hours), not pre-owned by end user. Reason for discount is the dealer says they can't sell as new and warranty because it has been registered once before. Story goes; New units intransit to dealer, truck goes off road and on to it's side. Units are dumped around the back of the truck. Trucking company "buys" the units in order to offset their liability costs therefore they are now "registered" and can't be sold as new. This dealer now goes and buys the units from the trucking company for a deep discount, fixes any damage (can't tell me to what extent for this particular unit) then sells them for discount as well. There are a few plastic scratches on the one I'm looking at but can live with given the discount.
First does any of this sound unreasonable? They will undoubtedly try the hard sell on an extended warranty now especially given my vocal concerns. Does anyone have an extended warranty that they've used with success? Do they typically cover the typical failure items I'm reading here (belts/joints/etc)? OR is everthing on this fairly serviceable. Use for this will be VERY light relative to most (neighborhood pavement pounder, grocery getter, school transportation) wiht some light off road use maybe to beach/sand dunes/established dirt trails. any comments appreciated..... |

Re: New to Board/Ranger - Looking to but 08 - Couple of Qs
Hey JR, Welcome to our club!
It does sound like a bit of a tale to me but, if real and you are sure the machine was just dumped and not beat otherwise then it could be a great deal. Kind of like a salvage title! As for you questions about warranties, they do cover allot of things but not usually the normal wear items such as belts, brakes and stuff. I think the best way to say it is manufacturer defects and premature failures in the drive line. Buy your extended warranty from our sponsor Motorsport Super Store. the polaris one is the best I have heard of so far and Scott does us right. Considering the usage you describe and if this is an honest assessment of what you have planned then the machine should serve you very well. Those of us who do not hammer their machines seem to do pretty well with few issues. Those who do hammer them have to accept the facts they are not indestructible. Sounds like a nice deal if the truth is being told. Gary

Re: New to Board/Ranger - Looking to but 08 - Couple of Qs
Updated 6/4: Well I went ahead and pulled the trigger about 5 weeks, The machine is fabulous. I'm at 15 hours and coming up on my 20 hr service. Question is is this really $500 well spent at my dealer to change oil and go through it, or is this reasonably simple DIY stuff? There is no factory warranty but I have an extended warranty which I haven't gone through in detail yet. Do extended warranties need service done at the factory typically?, thanks

Re: New to Board/Ranger - Looking to but 08 - Couple of Qs
Congrats on the purchase JR! Glad you are happy so far.
You do have a knack for asking great questions but they are not all that easy to answer. Normal maint. is not covered by any warranty. It goes under the caption of oil is cheap and engines and tranny's are real costly! I would not pay $500 to my dealer to do what I should do but, you might be getting a great deal if the dealer does you right and you are not mechanically inclined. THAT WAS A VERY LOADED RESPONSE! I know my equipment, I know how to do 95% of the fixes I might ever need and I also know that we have excellent dealers as well as A HOLES under the Polaris signs. If you have confidence in yourself and your abilities then DIY unless your time is more valuable. You can find anything you need right here thru our sponsors. Take it to the dealer and pay the freight, but be sure the job is getting done and done right if you can't DIY. To say it another way, I don't want my Dentist to have grease under his finger nails but he probably wants his machine to be maintained right and knows he can trust himself to do it so latex gloves are fine with me. If you can do it and have the time and ability then always DIY.

Re: New to Board/Ranger - Looking to but 08 - Couple of Qs
I have done all of my own oil changes. They are not that difficult. The last change, I switched over to Amsoil, which was cheaper than Polaris oil, even after adding shipping!
