I need help! Computer problem?
I have a 2005 Ranger that's been in and out of shop the last three months. Can't find problem. Runs fine for a while til warm than acts like starved for gas. Shut of for a while will run fine again. Dealer says might computer but can't be sure. Want to spend $600 for new computer and see if it fixes the problem. Can't we verify computer problem before I spend another $600?

Re: I need help! Computer problem?
That Stinks! I hate those problems where buying an expensive part may or may not be the fix.
I think I would do a search here and at other sites to see if I could locate a good used computer someone might have changed out. I don't honestly know enough about the electronics but I have read a few threads where guys buy tuned up ECUs so there might be a few laying around in boxes somewhere. You might also check with Dale at Dirty Dawg as he has been a real patriot right here with getting guys fixed up. Gary

Re: I need help! Computer problem?
I had the same problems on a 500 EFI and found multiple problems. First off it had multiple exposed wires within the harness possibly causing short(s) and thus causing burnt terminal at surefire box under hood (ecm looking box). Removed one of the two connectors and found visual evidence of circuit overload, repaired connector and opened box to find the terminal got hot enough to melt the solider off the circuit board. Resolidered connection and repaired the multiple shorts in harness by removing entire harness, taking off conduit one piece at a time and carefully looking for cracking, chaffing, damaged wires. Repair these items and reinstall harness. This also fixed a weak charging system and Ranger has been running fine ever since. The conduit and routing of the main harness causes the conduit to rub through the wires in the harness. So although it took the better part of a day to do all this, my out of pocket was a roll of electrical tape, a few connectors, and minor amount of wire. Good luck and hope this helps.
