Heater

I was looking at the prices of heaters for my ranger and they are very expensive for one that pipes into the radiator. Has anyone ever tried pulling a heater core out of a junk car to use? It may not be pretty but seems like it could do the job for much less money.

It depends on how ghetto you want your heater to look. I have the spendy on the bolts up under the dash and has the controls mounted in the switch panel. Looks factory. You could pick up a Mojave Heater for a couple hundred bucks or less and prob make it look good, but you may find it will be way more efficient and cost effective to just buy the kit.

Thanks AKCREW. I would agree that it might not look pretty but on the other hand, you might be able to do it for less than $100. It might be possible to enclose it in some of fabbed metal inclosure to make it look better also.

It will be a while anyway, I don't have any doors yet. I just got a roof and rear windshield to go along with my front windshield the other day. This may be a project for next year as I have already spent enough on roofs, windows, winches and so on!

I put the Polaris heater in mine, and even discounted it was about $800. I learned in the process that the coolant circulation in the Ranger is at a higher pressure than in autos, so a scrap heater core might not work for you. Also, the price included a control lever, HI-LO-OFF fan switch, coolant plumbing, hot air ducting, and three directional vents, one each above the driver and passenger foot area and one high on the dash that I direct at the windshield like a de-fogger, which is often needed when it gets really cold. It looks and works like it was designed for my Ranger - because it was. I'm glad I went with the real McCoy. Hope this helps! [I can send photos when I get back to AK if you'd like.]

Was the $800 installed? Do you have the item number of the heater?

Go to Summit Racing and look up SUM-991102-1

It works great!

Speaking of using a different heater core, one could probably buy a brand new heater core intended for use in a car.

Polaris Heater Part Number

It was $801.97, discounted from $943.49 list price, plus installation. I had a number of things installed at once, so I didn't get a breakout of the labor for the heater alone, but it might have been as much as $200.

It was 18 degrees below zero when I went to bed last night, and I have plowed in warmth and comfort a dozen times this winter so far, so whatever it cost was worth it!

The part number is PO2878458. Hope this helps!
