Winch Rebuild?
Bought used 06 Ranger 700 with Polaris Glacier plow & Venom 4000 hardcore series winch. When I loaded it on the trailer the guy I bought it from said, he'd always used the winch to cinch down the front when transporting. It ran out fine, wound back in and held fine. When I got home it wouldn't work at all. I finally got it to wind back in with jumpers off a battery directly on the posts on the motor. All that would happen with the switch was a clicking sound from control box. Now it will not do anything with juice to the posts, I tried off jumper pack, battery charger, and jumper cables off my pickup. I see I can get a motor off Venoms site for $38 and brushes for $5. Never rebuilt an electric motor but not afraid to try, I've done a bit of shade tree wrenching, any input or advice would be appreciated, thanks

The same thing happened to me on my brand new warn 2500. Turns out all I needed to do was unspool the whole thing then it started to work normally , it couldn't hurt!

Never rebuilt a winch but have done a few other motors. All I can say is pay very close attention to how everything is. If you got to take some pictures to remember. It wouldn't hurt to try and rebuild it. SEems a lot cheaper. Keep us posted.

DO NOT BUY A MOTOR OR BRUSHES YET!
Sounds like the winch MOTOR works fine. I think you just need a new contactor (solenoid). That is a part which clicks to allow juice to flow through the motor to make it work. |

I found a step by step winch troubleshooting guide that said to start with the winch applying power to the power studs directly bypassing the contactor. Which as I stated in original post worked initially, but after I got it wound back in it stopped. Now I get nothing when putting power direct to motor. Well, I ordered the parts already anyway so I'll post my results, thanks.
