Transmission problem

Help please. I have a 2005 ranger. It won't shift when it's below freezing. I have changed the fluid and confirmed that it is not a problem with the cable. After it runs awhile to warm up it will shift.

Check your idle speed, if the idle speed is too high it will either not shift into gear at all or will be very hard to shift.

sounds like you have some ice in the shift lever/linkage?

likely near the transmission if the engine heat is enoughf to thaw it out. check where the shift linkage enters the transmission.

Did you notice if the fluid you changed was discolored or did it look the same as the lube you replaced it with? What I am getting at is if there is possible moisture contamination inside the gear case from change in temps, going from cold to warm storage or from operating in water of any kind. That in turn could change the lube to jello in cold temps and make shifting difficult as well as cause extreme wear on the parts in the transmission.

I have seen instances where the Polaris lubes have turned to sludge when exposed to any moisture. Polaris has changed its lubricants to new and improved so many times its hard to keep track. Their lubes are mediocre at best.

It's also possible that the bearing in the primary isn't spinning freely when its cold. You might pop the cover off the clutch assembly when its cold and see it it spins freely.

Un-hook the cable and hand-shift it, see if it shifts easy or not by hand. If it does, follow it back. I suspect the cable....
