they make a special tool to put swirl marks on them, grinder doesn't do it as good but will work.

It has a name I will have to search. I came across it when purchasing my fab tools. it has a special wheel that is made out of carbide or tool steel and gives it the scratch look and stays even. A lot of the big jeeps you see with that done had it done with that tool. I think the same place where I got my dimple dies had that tool. I will search for you.
