Do we have a Small Engine Wizard here?

Off Topic for sure but I'm hoping to find some knowledge here with us Motor heads.

I have a Troy Bilt "Horse" Rototiller with a tired engine. It is a Briggs & Stratton 8 HP, I/C Model # 195432-0149. It is a Horse and has been going strong for over 30 years.

A bit tired these days and a rebuild is for sure possible but a new motor might be a better idea. These types of motors are pretty standard in the Lawn & Garden field.

Should I just buy a new motor for around $300 or spend $250 or more rebuilding the tired one?

I was at a Yard Sale yesterday and some real old guy had 2 brand new motors. He was just a few years older than me and practically ancient at 61. He had 2 new Techumsa Small engines. One was a 7 HP with a Cast Iron block, Model # HH-70 and the other was a 10 HP of the same vintage. He wants $300 for each and they are new and in the boxes but probably 20 years old.

I don't know if they will fit and bolt right on or if either are a decent deal at $300. I tried to find out what engines replace the B&S I/C 8 HP I have but I am at a major disadvantage with a BS slow internet and on the weekend. What I do know is that I need a 3/4 inch horizontal shaft with a 3/16 inch key way. I seriously doubt there is a big diff between a 7 HP, 8 HP or 10 HP motor where rottotilling is the chore. I can't run behind or jump as fast as this work horse will go so power is not the issue as much as fit and ease of change is.

My tiller is serial # 408224 and a new or rebuilt motor will keep it going for another 30 years or so. Parts availability becomes the major issue with these tried and true dinosaurs.

Does anyone here know the answers I need?

Gary

Re: Do we have a Small Engine Wizard here?

My Uncle has one. And the Good Lord only knows how many miles I've walked behind it in a cane field, or a garden. It's also around 30 years old. If it were mine and could get the parts I would rebuild the 8 H.P. Briggs. But admittedly I'm biased in favor of the Briggs over the Techumsa. Never had any luck with the Techumsas. If the rebuild parts are available then you won't have to worry about making another engine fit.

Re: Do we have a Small Engine Wizard here?

Yea Elkhound, These things are built like tanks and seem to go forever but at 30+ years old parts availability for the motor itself are dwindling.

I can still get it rebuilt or do it myself but it will cost close to what a complete new motor can be had for these days. It is doubtful that a new motor will last as long but then again I doubt I have 30 years left in me.

You never know Grazor. My Grandmother use to say to those she thought would live a long life, They'll have to knock you on the head on Judgment Day.
