What Not to do With Your Winch

So... I tried to lift a stump into my Ranger's bed today, using the winch. I ran the synthetic winch line over the ladder rack to the back of the Ranger, and tried to lift the stump out of its hole. It wasn't a particularly huge stump.

The winch grunted, and the Ranger squatted, but the stump didn't load up. Heck, it didn't even leave the ground. Then I looked at the front of the rack and this is what I saw.

Crap.

I feel stupid.

I think your stump maxed out your rack's load capacity LOL.

OUCH! I've seen a winch cable put a 6" crease in the hood and roof of a fire rescue vehicle after snapping trying to pull a car out of a ditch but that's a first. Sorry dude I hope it's fixable.

I'll work on it today. First I need to get that piece of tubing off and straighten it... then I'll decide whether to put a sleeve over it or try to slide a piece inside to reinforce it.

Thanks,
The original owner, my late friend and employer, bought the ladder rack when he bought the Ranger new in 2006. I have gotten a lot of good use out of it, and I've only owned the Ranger for about 11 months.

Near as I can tell, they didn't make the racks for very long. Some months ago I tried to find photos of another Ranger with a ladder rack and I couldn't find any.

I got it fixed, but need to take another pic. I removed and straightened the bent piece, but as we all know you can't un-kink a piece of tubing once it's been bent. So I poked around my place and found a chunk of old galvanized EMT that would slide over it. I cut it to length and drilled it and painted it black. Let it dry good and finally installed it today.

It looks good and the rack is stronger now. Don't think I'll be winching anything over it, though ;-)
