'12 500 relay humming

I went to start my Ranger today after putting it away last night running perfect and as I turned the key to the first position, I could hear a vibration under the hood. As I turned the key to the next position I got another odd noise and then nothing when turning the key to start.

The relay making the humming was the chasis relay. I assume it is bad but I have never had relay make a sound like that before. Has anyone had this happen to them?

I am hoping that AutoZone carries small relays like this so I can get one tomorrow and try it. I am lost without my Ranger. The barn is just far enough I don't care to make multiple trips on foot to!

Since a relay is an electrically operated switch, it sounds like the portion that does the switching is malfunctioning, and that's what's causing the buzz.

Just a little update, I had more time tonight to mess with it. When I turn the key to the first position, the relay hums or buzzes. The next position, the noise I was hearing I believe is the rear differential engaging and disengaging repeatedly. At the start position, the lights on the gauge just flash but the wierd noises stop.

Like I mentioned, it was running fine when I parked it two nights ago. What has happened all of a sudden. Is this some sort of grounding issue?

Sounds like it may be... or maybe a defective ignition switch. First thing I would check would be the battery cables, then I would look at where the wiring harness attaches to the ignition switch.

I pushed my ranger out of the garage today because I was going to go get the tractor and take it back to the barn. I thought, I should see what it does this time. It started.

I am glad it started but now when it going to do this again? I am sure it will wait till I am away from the house!
