Nothing "Crazy" about the rest of my info so just stay in WV and you will be fine. Go North and East of WV and there is a very real chance you won't find many places it is legal to ride.

PA, NJ, NY, VT, NH, and Maine all have some tough regs on ATV riding and limit it severely to particular areas or not at all.

Gary
And Im pretty sure it's statements like this that is the reason nobody is posting in here? Trust me, I'll stay in WV and you can stay wherever it is that you ride. As for places legal to ride I've riddin from PA all the way down to FL and never had a problem. Maybe it's just you......
I think Gary is just stating some facts here for the benefit of those who don't live in WV. I am able to ride where I choose so far here in McDowell County, WV, but it ain't so elsewhere.

Living in NY I agree that it is def not an off-road friendly state. The best option I have found so far is the RAC permit in PA. For a $100/yr you have access to tens of thousands of acres of riding. You must be insured/reg and please stay away from any mining operations or they may pull the permit system.

Re: The Best Places to Ride

Where in NY MIKD? I am by Monticello and not far from the PA line but a long way from where the riding is over there. There are a few places up in the NY North country that allow some riding but few and far between and not worth the hassle if you stray on to private or state protected lands.

While living in WV I did a lot of riding with guys who knew the trails and the Do's and Don'ts. The H M Trail system was a safe alternative when I went alone but it is pretty easy for guys who grew up in that area to go for ever with no trouble. Others who are unfamiliar with the territory take a chance. I can run these NY mountains just the same but I know where the trouble lurks and where to steer clear of.

Re: The Best Places to Ride

Well let's see for NY you can head up to the Tug Hill Plateau and ride all day on many nice trails you do need reg, ins and a trail permit some towns in Upstate NY have opened all their roads to ATVing the Town of Greig for instance you can ride anywhere if you want to no permit required but registration is required and insurance... I am interested in riding my Ranger 800 legally and now there is no reg for it in NY, but as of this posting there is legislation to allow registration for them, you can ride in NY (atvs and utvs only) on another state's registration.. but some areas you may need to purchase a trail permit... I have heard ifyou place the traingle plackard on the back of the utv you can ride them legally.... no direct knowledge of this though.....

Re: The Best Places to Ride

Thanks I HUNT.

I have heard there are a few places in the north country of NY that have relaxed their stance on ATVing. I don't know the particulars about just how relaxed they have become. NYORVA may have some info about these areas and the "Do's and Don'ts. I also know there are a few clubs in the north country that might help with the rules and where to ride.

The fact does remain that in NY there is no riding of ATVs on any state owned land and it is also illegal to ride on private land unless you have written permission from the land owner in your possession. Please don't take me wrong here as I am all for getting out and enjoying a nice day of riding. What concerns me is the penalties if you happen to end up in the wrong place at the wrong time and with the wrong officer.

Here in Sullivan County they organize two sanctioned rides each year and you are completely legit to ride those trails. If you get caught riding those same trails on your own and not during a sanctioned ride you could be in for some serious issues. We owe it to our members to provide accurate info and to never guide them toward trouble. I have said this many times, I can ride all day long and never hit the same trail with virtually no trouble but I have been here for 58 years and know the trails and woods for one and when I do go I am very careful to not get caught. I am most definitely breaking the law and the rangers here now have ATVs they patrol the woods on. It is kind of odd that in the winter you can ride on any frozen lake that has a public access ramp for boating. You also always need Registration, Insurance, helmets and seat belts fastened if your machine has them. Most snowmobile trails are off limits to ATVs in this state. When a township relaxes the rules do not mistake this for anything goes. They can un-relax them the second they think you are going too fast or being a jerk.

NY is a very tough place to own and enjoy an ATV and very little is being done by our elected officials to free up the millions of acres our tax dollars support. More often than not the rules become more restrictive.
