2006 Ranger engine wont start, dead, electrical problem
A neighbor of mine is experiencing an electrical problem with his 2006 Polaris Ranger 4x4 EFI (500 I think). It may crank the first time for that day for a few seconds then act as if the battery voltage is dying then quits cranking and dies completly. We have replace the battery with a new one and also tried using the battery out of the lawn mower (just charged) just to be sure the new battery wasn't bad. When jumping across the starter solenoid, the starter will crank with plenty of power indicating the battery is good. When the key is turned to the on position none of the lights on the dash will light up. Head lights will not come on, nor can you hear the fuel pump build up pressure. Completely dead. We have check for continuity and for voltage on the red (fusible link?) wire that is attached to the battery terminal block that goes to the control module under the hood. There is 12.5VDC at the wire terminal end (J1H) supplying voltage to the control module. Coming out of the control module the orange ignition wire (J2M) which feeds the ignition switch has only 7.5VDC. I would expect this to be 12V since the ignition switch feeds the starter solenoid. We have removed the ignition switch to check continuity across the switch terminals. There is continuity from D-C when turning to the first position on the switch and continuity across A-B when turning to the start position. Brake is pressed when starting and we have also tried jumping across the brake pressure switch. With all this done and said we thought the control module under the hood was bad. Ordered new $200 module and same thing happens….Nothing. I have removed battery terminal strip and cleaned wire terminals there looking for a bad ground. There is also a module under the seat that I have not dealt with yet. Could it be bad and keep the lights from working and not allow the starter to turn over? We have not spent much time looking at sensors or wiring in the engine/drive train compartment. Has anyone seen or heard of this before and know where I need to go from here? Dealership went out of business and would like to repair the Ranger ourselves if possible.
Thanks for any assistance. Eddie in Va. |

Re: 2006 Ranger engine wont start, dead, electrical problem
It kind of sounds like the problems I have. Mine will crank for a short time then it will go dead then it will do the same thing. Listen to hear if your 12 volt cut off switch is cutting out, it sound like you have a short somewhere.

Re: 2006 Ranger engine wont start, dead, electrical problem
Just thought I'd stop by and let you know I found the fix for my electrical problem that I posted a question for here. The explanation is too long to write again, so search "500EFI help in Iraq", and you'll see my problem and fix. Hope this may help some of you out. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Good luck.
