Need help with 04 Ranger 4x4

Hello all. I would like to seek the wisdom of the forum. My brother wants me to buy his 04 ranger. It only has 27 hours on it, but has sat for four years having never run. Obviously the carb is needing some work. I pulled the cover off the carb and pulled the needle assembly out. Cleaned everything I could see with carb cleaner and put it back together. I also opened the drain on the bottom of the carb to drain out the cleaner and old fuel. I siphoned the old fuel out. I also pulled the fuel line off the carb and tried to start it a few times to run the old fuel out of the line.

So the problem. Now when I try to start it two things happen. I am able to get it to run with a little coaxing. But fuel comes out through the two overflow ports on the carb and a little will come out the drain on the bottom of the carb. Obviously something still isn't right.

So are there any easy fixes here? Does the carb need rebuilt? The drain letting fuel out really gets me. Can't explain that one. So any advice would be helpful.

Thanks
J.

Please excuse any typos. Doing this on am iPhone.

Sounds like the needle valve in the carb is not seating properly. Without going to details, the floats raise up and seat this needle as the fuel enters the bowl. If the needle does not seal then the bowl will overflow.

I would take the carb off and look it over good to be sure the float and needle valve are not sticking and that there is no varnishing in the tube. There is usually a tab on the float that actuates the needle and if this tab has been bent it will not function as designed. The needle itself might have a tiny spring on the end that is meant to hook under the float tab and might not be fastened correctly. When the floats rise they should push the needle valve up and seat it against the jet inside the venturi tube so it is closed and no fuel gets past it.

Thanks. I think I'm going to have to take it apart further. Guess I'll need to get a rebuild kit too.

On my 2006 which was doing the same thing (gas coming out the top tubes), the float and needle were okay, but the smaller of the two jets was clogged solid with varnish. Had to remove the jet and carefully clean it. After that I put it back together and it runs just fine.
