2001 transmission

hi to all . i'm new to the forum but have some tech questions for the gearheads out here. i recently bought a 2001 type 10 ranger for next to nothing because it has a high pitch whine in forward gear (not in reverse at all). the previous had explaned to me that his grandson did a full service on the unit and had forgotten one important thing. that was to tighten the drain plug on the trans when he ws done. so needless to say lost all agl fluid and ran it like that for sveral days until he started to notice a whine .they took it to a dealership to see what was wrong and needless to say dealership wanted more to see what was wrong with the unit than what it was worth. now it's mine.
pulled the trans. and tore into it and replaced ring and pinion gear and bearing. that did not fix it. (ouch). now with more investigation i see that the backlash on the new gearset is way out of range.
so question is (sorry for the long post) does anybody out there know if there is a way to set the backlash on this gearset? the tech at polaris does'nt even know. he was supposed to call for tech support but have not heard from him in over two weeks .
