2006 Ranger 700 - electrical issue

I have a Browning edition 2006 Ranger 700. It ran great at the end of last hunting season, and when I went to get it ready for this year, the battery was completely dead. No big deal, I replaced the old battery with a new one, fully charged and expected all to be right in the world. No such luck. I get no power to anything. No indicators when the key is switched to the run mode, no headlights, etc.

I tested the power at the key switch. The ECM (silver under hood) red wire has 12 volts on it, but the orange wire into the key switch only has 5.5 volts on it. I suspect the ECM has gone bad, but have no way to test it. When I short the starting solenoid, the ranger turns over with no issues.

I hate to go and purchase a new ECM with no assurances that my problem is it. I have pulled both of the connectors off of the ECM, and there is no sign of heat or other damage.

I cannot find any breakers or fuses in the circuit. Can someone tell me how to test the ECM, and assuming it is bad, what you recommend replacing it with?

Jerry

I looked in my service manual and I didn't find anything about testing the ECM - but I did find this, which you may find interesting:

Quote:
Never attempt to disassemble the ECM. It is sealed to prevent damage to internal components. Warranty is void if the case is opened or tampered with in any way.

All operating and control functions within the ECM are pre-set. No internal servicing or readjustment may be performed. If a problem is encountered, and you determine the ECM to be faulty, contact the Polaris Service Department for specific handling instructions. Do not replace the ECM without factory authorization.

The relationship between the ECM and the throttle position sensor (TPS) is very critical to proper system operation. If the TPS is faulty, or the mounting position of the TPS is altered, the TPS must be re-initialized.

For the purpose of troubleshooting, a known-good ECM from another Polaris 500 EFI may be used without system or engine component damage.
