If it is fuel injected you have to fool the rev limiter, not sure if the carb engines have the rev limiter.

My ranger 400 has a carb and it has a rev limiter. I do not know how it works. I just know that it has one.

Cheapest way is to look for a new CDI box. Several different brands. Some have a limiter switch if someone drives it to keep it slow like kids or brother in law.

What would a new CDI box do? Doesn't it just make spark for the plugs?

The CDI box is the computer that basically runs the engine. The factory CDI has the rev limiter installed on it. You can purchase aftermarket CDI's that don't have the rev limiter built into it. Some of these aftermarket CDI's can be user programmed to adjust all sorts of engine management controls such as advancing or retarding the timing, adjusting fuel ratio, etc. Some of these actually allow you to turn on or off the rev limiters.

Make sure is does not have the "red-band" on the secondary. My 2010 800 had said band. It is a little red plastic ring that keeps the secondary from fully closing, thus reducing speed. A chisel takes care of that....

You must have bought yours for road running, you will wear out your tires.
99.9 per cent of my riding is in the woods at average speed 10 to 15 miles an hour. And when I am riding, I stop and smell all the roses along the way.
