any down side to this idea ?

my winch is mounted to a plate, that has a reece hitch mount, so instead of buying another winch for the front of my ranger (obviously the factory reciever is in the rear) i was looking and found the front end top reciever for the front of the ranger. Are they pretty solid ? ? ? (utvheadquarters) is the link on this page where i found it.. this way i can simply move the winch front to back as needed.. others with experience is there a downside to this idea ?

Sounds reasonable. Only hassle might be running the power wires to the winch from both front and rear?

I put on a Polaris front receiver with the idea of maybe eventually getting a receiver mounted winch that can be moved to the front or rear. The receiver seems like it would handle it well enough. I believe there are kits out there for running the electrical connections to the rear. If you do it let us know how it works out for you.

my wired remote controll is just long enuff to reach the winch in the rear without hardwiring anything.. whenever the winch is needed i simply remove the wireing from my underseat storage and use the alligator clips for power.. wich brings up another question, i have no experience with winches, if you get burried in mud or a water crossing, and your winch is hardwired, isnt there risk of electrical damage ?

Good question. I have never heard of this being a problem, but I have never had my winch (on a Wrangler) under water. The connections could be covered with silicon for waterproofing on a hard wired set-up. For a hard wired plug that hangs in the rear or off the front when the winch is not in place, well that is a bit different. It would have to be covered much like plow hookup on a truck. I guess the answer would be have a disconnect switch near the battery so no juice goes to the contacts till you are ready to use it.

I've had my winch buried in both mud and water and it still works great. There is only power going to the winch when you are using it. Your remote controls a relay that powers the winch. So if your not running it there shouldn't be power at it. Hope this helps.

THATS GREAT INFORMATION ! thanks for putting this up, i was clueless. with this being the case, i may look into a kit (maybee something with disconnects and pigtails) hardwired to the machine, and i could attach the winch at either end via the hitch, and just plug it in.. i like the sound of this..

It will need to be made of heavy wire (like the wires that connect to the Ranger battery) in order to carry all the juice that the winch needs.
