Question Filter Change, How often on a

Hi All,
I just got a new 2012 500 Ranger and we will use in the Az/Calif desert, it is dusty like all deserts how often should I change the filter, everything is stock and I plan on leaving it that way , but is there a better filter replacement or is the stock one good enough, what about K&N, they swear they are the best, but so does a ton of others, I checked mine after our first weekend out, about 2 weeks ago and it looked brand new, I also got my son a new Outlaw Quad, his filter needed cleaning, any sugestions ? I read on here for the RZR the K&N are not to great, but what about for the 500 ranger ?
Thanks
Craig

In my case I have purchased from two dealers here in Az both machines are the same . Dealer 1 says change your oil every 40 hours for the Az desert, and dealer 2 says change your oil every 25 hours for the Az desert.
So split the difference and change mine at 30 hours.

Cool, thanks, what about air filters, is it worth getting a K&N replacement or just keeping it stock ? The filter is pretty cheap here in LA, the K&N, like $40.00 .

thats good, i cant remember if my filter (09 700xp) was $28 or $38 bucks.. a K&N filter is only $40 for this application thats pretty great.

But be cautios: Ive been a avid K&N user for over 20 years, cars, trucks, atv's, motorcycles, pretty much everything.. I have as of lately started becoming more involved in the particulars.. i wont bore you with numbers or stats, but a K&N filter is not the "BEST" at filtering dirt/dust/micron sized debree.. as a matter of fact your factory filter is going to do a better job than the K&N. If your seeking engine protection, stick with your paper filter or a suitable alternative, If your looking to mod your machine and less concerned with contaminants entering.. K&N is a great choice..

easy way to say it.. if you want to do a maximum life possability out of your engine, K&N probably isnt you best choice.. This isnt to say there a bad filter, pretty decent actually.. just not the best FILTER...

Thanks, I want to the machine to start every time and keep it stock, we ride it only in the CA/AZ desert and that is it, so I am not looking for speed or more power, stock is perfect for me, we will use it to shadow my son on his Quad and shoot at places that are safe, so I will stick with the stock one, I got a K&N, but will only use in case of emergency, can not return, but will find some use or trade or sell , but I am a stock guy all the way, I have a feeling if I start modifying it, I will just end up towing it and I would hate for it to break down way out in the middle of nowhere
