dust problem ?

I have a problem with dust coming in my razor through the top of the"fire wall" as i would call it!Does anybody got a solution for this problem? Thanks

Welcome Turner! This is a pretty common problem and there are a few solutions.

The dust is most noticeable if you have the full windshield and even worse if you also have the rear shield. It creates a vortex inside the cockpit and can also play some dirty tricks with your air filter since the engine breathes through the opening between the seats.

A block off kit is available or you can DIY it with foam or fiberglass insulation. I don't know if any of our sponsors sell the firewall block off kit.

What you need is some fresh air coming in through the windshield to balance out the vortex created. I know some company also makes a vent kit you can install in your windshield. Others have mentioned they remove the bottom rubber gasket on the shield and this allows enough flow through.

I do know if you go to the half shield in the warm months the problem is fixed. You can also put the half shield where ever you want it because it need not be fully at the bottom.

I also had the dust problem. I would be rideing by myself and get covered with dust. I have the short windshield. In the swamp my floorboards would fill up with weeds. I got a block-off kit from e-bay. No more dust, weeds, and hot air from the radeiator. The block off kit and the HID lights were the best money I ever spent!!!! The block=off kit is less than $50. A can of spray foam helped seal it even more.

At long last we got some rain. Over 13inches in one week. It sure made the swamp riding a lot harder. The block off kit sure keeps the weeds and heat out, but in the deeper water, the water creates a pretty waterfall on the inside of the firewall!!!! More spray foam!!!!!!

I have the same problem with the fine dust around here in the dry season. I also had a half windshield fitted. I have removed the windshield that has helped the problem but would prefer to use it. Where are the block off kits available? I would also have to get it shipped to Australia.

Hey Clive, glad to hear your RZR has finally arrived and you are enjoying it. Considering how far off the path you are located and the cost to get stuff shipped I would really just be doing this block-off thing myself. If you look under the dash from inside the machine you will see a good size gap up top of the firewall. You will also see holes in the firewall where steering and wires go through. The objective is to close off these gaps so the dust is not sucked in. Our local building supply company has a kit for sealing around a window air conditioner that has foam weather stripping about 2 X 2 inches square and it works pretty good.

You can also use the spray in expanding foam called great stuff here but it is unbelivably messey to work with and if you ever need to get plastic parts off it can be a problem.

Others have mentioned how they found some relief by moving the half shield up a couple of inches so it is not sealing at the bottom.

We don't get allot of hot dry spells around these parts so I don't have much issue with dust unless I am behind other machines.

I have a Ranger XP. I have a front window on it and to eliminate dust,I placed a rear window on it. The problem got worse. On one of your posts, You spoke about a company that makes a vent kit. If it is actually not a Polaris product, I will be ecstatic. I was told they didnt have a dust problem in the cab and I should talk to my dealer. Any advice you have on this issue would be great

Hi KPFrank, I have not remained current on what new products are available to help with this problem. Back when this topic first began to show up as an issue there was a company that sold vented windshields as well as a vent kit you could install on your existing Polaris shield. It was basically a slide bar with holes in it and you drilled opposing holes in your shield. When open the holes lined up and allowed air to flow in and this offsets the vacuum created. I don't know the company or even if they still sell this kit.

I am sure that anyone handy with a few basic tools could fashion something that will do the trick. I have seen these slide bars made from aluminum, lexan and even plexiglass with 6-8 one inch holes drilled through both pieces at spacing that will allow the holes to be fully closed or fully open and anything in between. Some drilled them at the top while others drilled them along the bottom and either position is claimed to work fine. I have not tried it since I don't have a dust issue here.
