What's it worth?

OK, my father in law wants to buy my 2008 RZR from me, and I am trying to figure out what a fair price is. It has 2900 miles on it. I have a price in mind, but want to hear from some of you what you think its worth. It is the machine in the picture below, minus the light bar and aluminum wheels.

Here is what I have added/done:

K&N prefilter modification

fuel jug and mount
beverage cooler and mount
custom built front and rear bumpers
hydraulic brake lock

Just did complete service with fluid change all around

Sounds like a No Win situation! I am pretty much against selling any of my vehicles to a family member. If any thing goes wrong with it you will have some trouble or feel obligated to step up.

That said, I would say your machine should be worth somewhere around $8,000 but I don't know the real condition or how hard or easy it has been driven.

If it were me and didn't have much choice to get out of selling it to a family member I think I would get an accurate "Blue Book" value on it with a high and low figure. Say it comes in at $7,000 for a low and $8,000 for a high. I would show the print out to Dad and tell him to make you a fair offer of what he thinks it is worth. If he says $7,500 I would tell him give me $7,000 and let it go.

This way you didn't beat him at all and gave him a better deal than he was willing to pay. You did your part and even if you take a loss you did buy some valuable points by being a fair son in law.

You could also take his offer straight up and then buy him an extended warranty for a year or two as a gift if that's possible.

Think about what the low you want to get from Joe Blow off the street and then do Dad a better deal. Just be absolutely certain there is no known issues with the machine and cross your fingers that nothing does go wrong for at least a year after he takes it.

Father in law backed out. Since he retired, he is finding out money doesn't grow on trees any longer. Probably a good thing in the end, as you said, sometimes selling to a relative can be bad news.
