2004 ranger oil tank vent hose

Newbie here. I just purchased a 2004 Ranger 4x4 and am in the process of changing all the fluids. I changed the engine oil and also cleaned the oil hose and screen and then filled the tank with 2 quarts of 0-40. But my owners and shop manual tells me I have to prime the vent hose about two inches from the tank. This is impossible as it goes down behind the tank immediately. It also says this line runs to the air box? Mine goes down and runs along the frame and just ends there. Naturally, I am very confused. Any help here would be greatly appreciated>
