Will not shift into Reverse or Park

My 2018 Ranger 570 midsize transmission will not shift down further than Neutral. It seems from/to Neutral, Low and High okay. When I pull it downward, it has a 'hard stop', there is no play when I try pushing further down. I read lots of posts on being stuck IN park or reverse, but none the other way around. Any ideas where to begin diagnosing the issue?

Have you tried with the unit turned off?

Thereís a shift lever that the cable is attached to in the rear. Take the cable off the lever Should be a cotter type pin. Then try to manually shift it

Unhook the cable from the shifting arm on the passenger side of the transmission to see if the shift lever and cable work freely.

Edit: You beat me.

I removed cable, and yes, I was able to shift transmission... ok, so it's the shifting cable and/or lever... I guess that's good news, it's not the transmission! Do I need to 'reset' the shifter, it doesn't seem the cable will retract enough to pull the transmission into R or P ?

(I'm pretty good at following directions and performing mechanicals if I have instructions, I aughta get a repair guide like I have for my pickup truck.)

I canít see how your cable is already messed up. I have a 17 ranger crew and itís life is in water and mud. Mine is flawless. I assume you never took the cable apart at the trans before and everything is stock and never worked on?

Right, everything is stock. Only thing I've done maintenance wise is oil change and fluid checks. (I also installed some aftermarket parts like skid plates under everything, windshield, roof, mirrors, and a winch.)

With the cable off, the transmission works fine. But the shifter still does not work okay. It still stops hard when trying to push below the neutral position, will not move lower than that.

Maybe it's the shifter lever itself?
