I have my heater all installed except for the coolant lines. Trying to decide to tap that 1/2" bypass line. What is this line for? It just comes from below the thermostat and then goes to the lower radiator hose.

Or should I install a thermostat bypass which is hard to find.

Uh, editing because I just noticed the original post is >4 years old. maybe someone else will benefit.
I don’t know that I can answer with authority but I suspect the bypass line is to allow coolant to flow regardless of need from the engine for cooling. Prolong water pump life and prevent coolant hose collapse would be my guess.
I’m at the same point as you regarding my heater install. My post asked the ID of the main coolant hose. Do you know? Is it 1”?
I’m interested because I want to install the thermostat performance kit from Statosclimate and I want to know the sizes BEFORE I start cutting hoses.
Hope I helped out a little with your question.
