Hello all.

We are new to the Ranger world, though we've had a 700 EFI Sportsman since '05 (love it and never had an issue with it). Our family has outgrown the ATV and are looking at buying an 800 Crew and would welcome any advice on some of the questions we're facing:

- New vs. Used? Pros/Cons other than saving a few thousand dollars? Are there older models that have had consistent problems? Big difference between 700 and 800 Crews?

- Diesel vs. Gas? We're not so worried about top speed (though I'm sure we'll miss the snappiness of an ATV) as we are about the projected longevity of a diesel motor over a gas one, plus the ability to make our own biodiesel if we wanted (who knows, we may have to some day if things keep going the direction they are). Pros/Cons? Which is easier to maintain? Which will likely last longer? Any issues starting a diesel in cold weather? Is the diesel *a lot* noisier than the gas? (Our local dealer only has gas ones and won't get a diesel on the lot unless we want it as there is no demand for it where we live.) We do have a diesel tractor, but we also have a gas powered amphibious ATV (an Argo for those familiar with it), so we can't completely eliminate gas from our endeavors.

- Are there other options we should consider for regularly transporting 4 or 5 people? We do plan to use it for field work, hauling stuff (wood, etc.), and some trail riding, but the primary purpose is hauling people and stuff to and from the swinging bridge that is access to our property and is more than 1/4 mile from our home.

- What problems should we be aware of? How long can we reasonably expect it to last assuming we take care of it? Do they require a lot of maintenance and is it involved or relatively easy?

- What accessories would you recommend as must haves, and better to go with OEM or third party, or does it make a difference?

Thanks for taking the time to read all this, and for whatever advice/input you can offer.

Used IMO.

Newer ones have many problems; excessive heat, wiring harness recalls, etc. Read up on the heat problems here in the forum.

Friend has a 2007 or so 700 EFI and it's pretty good. I have a 2006 500 4x4 carb and a friend has a 2002 500 4x4 carb and they are good also.

Dunno about diesel so can't help you there.
