Noise from engine area

Mine has a similar noise and I think its sheet metal on the header or the muffler.

I ordered a ton of noise isolation material and a db meter and plan on doing a complete "noise campaign" on my 900 when I get time. I will document what I did and let you all know what worked, if anything does.

The 900 is a GREAT machine but, Polaris did a few things that make me wonder. The cheap (noisy/jerky) torque converter parts is a given.

The other thing is the engine exhausts "backwards." The header runs forward under the passenger seat before doing a U-turn back to the muffler. Had they run the header to the rear to a sideways muffler at the very back of the machine, the noise reduction would likely have been significant. Plus, it would have kept heat out of the cabin in summer. Not the best choice IMHO.

Stay tuned...

I am 2.5 years into a HUGE property renovation.

Part of that entailed the replacement of both AC units. The company I hired prides themselves on a killer installation that looks better than most. Part of that involved lining portions of the air ducting system with a 1" thick fiberglass "board" material that has a heavy tin-foil on one side. They left me a 4x8 sheet of the stuff. I am going to fabricate a "box" to sit over the headers to see if that absorbs some of the noise.

I ran to Home Depot yesterday and changed my speed very slowly to see what buzzing I could generate. At about 4000 rpm and 28 mph, there was a "rattling cookie sheet" sound coming from under the passenger seat and the gap behind the seat.

I originally thought I would just get header tape and wrap the headers to cut down some of the high frequency noise. Then, after some research, I discovered wrapping headers shortens their life greatly as the temps go off-the-chart high and bad things happen to the metal. I figured the box will we a better choice.
