Coming from someone who doesn't own an atv or utv at all I'd take either one. The Diesel model supposedly gets better fuel economy than the gas models, but I've never been around them so I don't know how they are for operating them all around, but I would think being a Yanmar Diesel you would have no issues with them. The Diesel version isn't going to be as fast as the gas model but if you aren't into speed it will work just fine I would think.

are you talking about the full size 800, or the midsize 800?

midsize 800 and the 500 have considerably less payload and towing capacity then the full size 800 and Diesel. they are also physically smaller as well and a bit less costly, also the 500 is the most efficient gasoline powered version of the Ranger.

the fullsize 800 and Diesel tow and payload much more then the midsize does. they're larger but also a bit more costly. especially the Diesel version.

the 800 and 500 will be faster then the Diesel. as well as starting better in colder weather. however the Diesel is the most fuel efficient option. and unlike gasoline, Diesel fuel doesn't go bad if the machine sits for a while.

I test drove all three and settled on the 800 XP Ranger. The 800 had all of them beat on acceleration and performance. The three person seating, 1000 payload and 2000 towing capacity means I can do a lot with it. My dealer who is also a personal friend, said the diesel was mainly for commercial use where all other equipment is diesel powered. The new fuel stabilizers keep gas fresh for a long time. Each time I fill mine up, I add a can of Sea Foam additive to stabilize the fuel and keep my injectors clean.

Unless you have a specific need for a diesel ATV don't buy one. They don't have the power and speed the gas models have. I know someone who bought one and he got rid of it after only a year. Said it was slow and gutless
