I’ve been shopping for a recovery rope kit and not sure about what thickness to get and which vendor to purchase from.

I have a Kubota MX6000 HSTC (tractor) that I would include in the consideration.

I was thinking 1” x 30’.

Is it dangerous to use an over rated rope?

Yankum is really expensive. Rhino seems quality without the Yankum price. And then there is the Amazon options.

Thoughts?

I have several pieces of 1/2" good quality nylon rope that I have left over from my jeeping days.
For a sxs that would be as large as you need.
We used them as snatchum straps with the Jeeps and they stretch and pull fine.
Use a bowline knot in each end to make a loop.

Me, I’m cheap, I get a 1 1/2” x 30’ strap from Harbor Freight, $20, used it on my ATV for years, now it’s in a bucket in the bed of the 900XP Ranger. Here in Florida, it’s always mud that gets you stuck, and sadly , that’s the worst stuck to pull out of sometimes.

Thats fine for a atv , original poster also wants it for his Kubota tractor , your h-f strap would look like this if hooked to his Kubota o_O

Ha, you guys are all correct, I totally missed the intended vehicle. Yeah, OP will need something like the kinetic rope or straps I have in the truck, it weighs 2 tons.

I have a couple of these in 30' length and have used them on 1 ton dually trucks. Made by Ericson. That is a canadian price ,so about 30 bucks USD.

Whew, I wish mine was that inexpensive, I think I paid $180 for my 1”x30’ kinetic rope. They work great. I also have a couple 3” straps, with the loads a truck puts on them, they last forever.

This website has a lot of good information to help with your selection, along with quality products. I have a number of their recovery ropes from 1/2" - 1.25" and other items.

Thank you all for your guidance. There are several options to consider.

I ended up ordering the Rhino one inch with a couple of accessories so that I can use it with my tractor as well.

I was also researching front receiver options and I haven’t been convinced of a real strong option for recovery scenarios. It appears that somehow looping on the front chassis may be the better option, unless someone has a better idea about what may be used that wouldn’t get damaged in a rescue situation.

Agree with your front recovery option comment. The recovery gold standard requires a purpose-built, frame attachment point sufficient to handle the recovery load. I recently had a neighbor contact me about getting the house sitter unstuck from his property in her fairly new, compact car. I took a portion of my recovery gear- confident I could get her out of anything- but was I wrong. The front of her car was sitting in tire-dug holes and on the very wet ground. Long story short, I had no access to any under-car point I could trust to work and not cause any damage. She ended up calling her father and he had her unstuck in just a few minutes using a commercial tie-down "RTJ knuckle" we attached to factory holes in the unibody "frame" and a tow rope to his 4wd Toyota.

I subsequently ordered this to use as an option for lighter loads as an option when nothing else will work: 3"x36" Towing V-Bridle Strap with RTJ Frame Cluster Hooks | eBay

A soft shackle looped through some frame components is about the best universal option on a UTV.

Very interesting story and equipment. I’ve never seen anything like that. I looked at a couple of YouTube videos showing how the attachments work on the frame.

That’s definitely something to consider to include in my kit.

I’d also seen a YouTube video of a school bus rescue when they used what looked like soft shackles on the ends of a tree strap attached to the school bus chassis and the recovery rope attached to the middle of the strap to yank the bus out of a hole and snow. It worked similarl, but the bus had tow loops on the front.

Thank you for sharing.

As far as my light duty UTV is concerned, I welded two 1/2" D-rings (2k WLL each), as seen in the pic. That area is attached to the frame. I believe this strong enough for my Ranger.

That's a good option, especially since it pairs up well with the winch. But if you don't have that, or you don't also have the winch, and you are going to spend money on something - a soft shackle is universally a pretty good choice for most situations (and in your specific situation still a good option to hook a kenetic rope to those D-rings).
